Happy Year of the Snake!  This week, millions of people around the globe are celebrating the Chinese New Year and the start of a new lunar cycle.  An official week-long holiday in China, many are traveling to be with family, to eat “jiaozi” (dumplings) and to exchange gifts.

The culture of gift-exchange is deeply rooted in China, and social and legal norms dictate both how to give and to receive gifts.  Just as common in social as in business interactions, the gifts might range from an inexpensive trinket such as a “good luck knot” to an expensive watch.  But what is often meant as a sign of goodwill and friendship between business partners can also be a source of worry for companies who operate in China and are concerned about violating the anti-bribery laws of their home country or those of their host country.  The apparent contradiction between anti-bribery…

George On The Go

I live in Japan. I work in a Japanese speaking school. I want to learn Japanese. You think there would be nothing getting in my way, but you would be sadly mistaken. While I am now getting more into Jpop and terrible Japanese TV shows of people enjoying food, I’m still not really in a Japanese speaking environment.

For some reason, some people at work have suddenly come under the impression that I CAN speak Japanese, leading to situations like the time when I agreed to work on my day off, when I thought I was agreeing to lend a hand with lunch. But even so if something important needs to be relayed to me (a lesson idea, a meeting) it is always told to me in English.

engrishIt really might be!

All of my friends here speak English and have Japanese better than me and as such do the…

Travelling back to the future...on a train.

Apologies for the delay but a distinct lack of Internet and far too much sun have slowed my blog writing. But here I am in Australia and its a pretty awesome country: epic weather, very happy and friendly people and buckets loads of bizarre animals.
My first few days were spent avoiding using my back card, as I was skint and Australia ain’t cheap, so cue lots of walking and exploring. Luckily brisbane is perfect for this with huge parks and lots paths leading along the river which runs through the city. I found tropical birds in the botanics and bearded dragons (like iguanas but smaller) along the river edge. Coming from Scotland you don’t often find that many interesting creatures wandering around unless you live in Dundee and you’ve met the prehistoric sized seagulls.
I was lucky enough to meet up with one of my friends from scotland, who had…

Travelling back to the future...on a train.

After the first weeks work we headed back to the coast for the weekend.
Following a ten hour journey back to Brisbane, we arrived too late to sort out accommodation so that night 3 of us slept in the van. One of the best things about travelling in Australia is the free public services they offer. Most towns have free BBQ’s which are cleaned daily by the council and the beaches have free showers so you can quite easily live out of a van. After breakfast we decided to take a trip down the Gold Coast towards surfers paradise and coolangata, the funny thing is not a lot of people surf at surfers paradise, they tend to head further south towards coolangata and the beaches there. After a few hours on the beaches we headed off to meet one of zacks friends dean, who is a boat builder by trade…

Around the World in 95 Days

We are now on our way to Hayman Island in the Great Barrier Reef. This island is about a 20 miles off the North East Coast of Australia and is one of 72 islands that comprise the Great Barrier Reef. We flew onto Hamilton Island and then took a fifteen minute helicopter flight – our 3rd helicopter flight! – to the Hayman Resort. Hayman is a pristine, beautiful island and our suite afforded us great views of the beach and the Reef.  We felt some similarity between Hayman and Bora Bora (which eventually evolved to be regarded as Bora Boring because we stayed their too long) but we all agreed that Bora Bora’s lagoon offered better underwater excursions because of the sea life diversity and clarity of the water. However, overall we liked Hayman island better for there was simply more things to do.  The great Aussie hospitality included…

Around the World in 95 Days

It is Sunday afternoon on Jan. 20 and we have arrived to the Park Hyatt in Melbourne, which is our last stop in Australia.  As we fly into and drive through the Melbourne metro area, it reminds us of Chicago.  There are lots of trees and beautiful parks and thankfully, the city is not too congested. As we drove to the hotel, our driver spent most of the time telling us about how much better Melbourne is than Sydney so I guess you could say Melbourne also has a second city complex!!

After we got settled into our suite, we walked over to the Rod Laver tennis complex.  The Park Hyatt is in a great area of the city and the tennis complex is a 15-20 min walk.  The hotel is adjacent to the downtown area with lots of shop’s, restaurants, bars and theaters and we are walking distance to…
